William Drayton Rutherford papers, 1840-[ca. 1900] (bulk, 1858-1864).

Letters exchanged between William Drayton Rutherford and Sallie Fair document the couple's courtship prior to and during the war; Rutherford's enlistment for Confederate service, Apr. 1861, and departure for Virginia, June 1861; camp conditions; homefront activities, and efforts in support of the troops; Union occupation of Beaufort, S.C.; and regimental elections, re-enlistment, and conscription. Rutherford was captured at Brownsville, Md., paroled Oct. 1862, and severely wounded Dec. 1862. There is a gap in correspondence for 1863 until Rutherford rejoined his regiment in early 1864. He was promoted to colonel upon the death of regimental commander James Drayton Nance, 7 May 1864. Military actions discussed include First Manassas; Peninsula campaign; and Petersburg, Va., while letters from Sallie Fair Rutherford discuss conditions on the home front in Newberry, S.C. Later materials include an undated Rutherford famly genealogical chart, and letters written to Mary Butler Pope, daughter of Judge Y.J. Pope of Newberry, S.C., while she attended the Woman's College of Baltimore, including a letter, 29 July 189[3?] from Simeon Fair, a student at Clemson Agricultural College, who wrote about life on campus in the early years of the college and the military-like conditions
